ONGOING EVENTS

HAWAII ARTS SEASON

Looking for experiences beyond the beach? The annual Hawaii Arts Season, from late January through May, invites visitors to join residents as they enjoy the diversity of arts and culture with literally hundreds of events that celebrate the multi-ethnic panorama of activities held year round. No matter the age or interests of the visitor, the Hawaii Arts Season allows choices of theatre, symphony, opera, art exhibitions, dance tours, and cultural experiences unavailable elsewhere in the United States.

FIRST FRIDAYS

If visiting O'ahu on the first Friday of the month, plan on Oahu’s vibrant “First Fridays.” Downtown Honolulu galleries and studios open their doors into the night to celebrate artists, art lovers, and the arts. The event is free and features more than 20 participating galleries and a multitude of restaurants and clubs that cater to First Friday crowds. Live music, street entertainment and wine tasting add to the festivities. A free, walking map is available at all participating sites. It is a great way to meet residents with an interest in and a passion for the arts.

ARTafterDARK

Visiting O'ahu on the last Friday of the month (February through October) instead? Join Oahu’s young professionals at “ARTafterDARK.” These almost-monthly themed events at the Honolulu Academy of Arts offer an opportunity to view the Academy’s collections, listen to live music, dine on delicious appetizers and share artistic ideas.

ART ON BUSINESS

Here on business with little time to get to the arts? Or wanting to find a great spot to view some of Hawaii’s public art pieces? The Hawai'i Convention Center houses a $2 million collection of unique Hawaiian art ensuring busy conventioneers the opportunity to enjoy Hawaii’s distinct arts without having to leave the building. Most striking are: Gift of Water, a towering bronze statue at the entrance of the building; colorful frescoes illuminating the ancient Hawaiian lifestyle by renowned artist Jean Charlot; and Reef Map, a multi-media rendition of Hawaii’s ocean floor.
